Chris, I listened to this interview and believe that the “Shadow work” concept was misunderstood and misrepresented.
In Jungian psychology ‘shadow work’ is a term for integrating the unconscious elements of the psyche; which a person tends to project onto the outside environment, usually a person, but also certain situations. One’s “shadow” is recognized by an extreme and irrational emotional reaction to another person. It usually manifests as extreme negativity, hate, fear, etc. Shadow work involves becoming aware of this reaction, recognizing that it comes from an area of one’s personal psyche that is not accepted by oneself (usually by parental injunction). Shadow work is a tool for growth in self-knowledge – a necessary attribute of a mature Christian.
