Jesus isn\u2019t giving us poetic advice\u2014He\u2019s commanding us to live like our Father in heaven, who \u201ccauses His sun to rise on the evil and the good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some interpreters believe the phrase \u201chate your enemy\u201d was Jesus referring to certain <strong>rabbinic or cultural traditions<\/strong> of His day. The <em>Dead Sea Scrolls<\/em>, written by the Essene community at Qumran, even instructed initiates to \u201clove all the sons of light and hate all the sons of darkness\u201d (1QS 1:9\u201311).
